Factors affecting source-independent measurements of loudspeaker systems and concert halls are discussed. The concepts of sparse and sufficient excitation signals are introduced, and the effect of such signals on the computed transfer function is explained. A new algorithm to obtain precise transfer function measurements with program material excitation is introduced, and is shown to produce amplitude accuracy equivalent to that obtained with conventional FFT analysis with Gaussian noise excitation.
