Characterization of Simultaneous, Forward and Backward Masking

Document Thumbnail

Perceptual coders rely on masking effects in the human auditory system to reduce the bit rate required in digital recording or broadcasting systems. To design such coders, to make them as efficient as possible, and to evaluate them, requires a knowledge of the characteristics of simultaneous, forward and backward masking. This paper gives an overview of these topics.
