Traditional measurement methods like the signal-to-noise ratio are useless to predict the sound quality of low bit-rate audio coding systems. Several perceptual measurement methods have been developed over the last few years. They use a psychoacoustic model to get an estimate of the actual audibility or loudness of coding artifacts. The perceptual models used in these measurement systems will be explained.
