The number of extensive subjective listening tests organized by various international bodies has increased during the last few years. The broadcasters obviously gain much useful information from such activities. Unfortunately, there are a number of drawbacks to subjective tests, in addition to the often very high requirements on resources. A major problem is that human listeners cannot be involved in a more continuous and accurate observation process.: The development of perceptual models for the prediction of sound quality has probably just begun. Despite this somewhat premature status, a first study of the application of one model has been performed. One of the objectives has been to define the so-called -criticality profile- for a specific sound codec and program source. Some of the results will be presented in this paper.
