Designing New Public Address Systems for Mass Transit Applications Utilizing Computer Control (and Common Sense)

In 1992, the New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA) required a new public-address system. The size of the NYCTA system, as well as the functional requirements of the new system, indicated that a networked, centrally controlled PA system should be developed. The ensuing design process is the subject of this paper.
