The use of fixed versus floating point arithmetic in signal processing for professional audio applications has been debated over many years and certainly pre-dates today's luxury of being able to select a suitable Digital Signal Processing (DSP) chip off the shelf. However the correct choice of number format must still be made, based on performance, and cost trade-offs, even though today's available h/w ensures that the implementation is a great deal easier than in the past.
