The personal computer architecture has become an industry standard for many business and entertainment applications. Some manufacturers have included proprietary audio functions, principally, the ability to record and replay digitized audio samples for many years. The introduction of standardized audio functions in common Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) has precipitated the adoption of several standards for audio in multimedia computers. This paper is intended to outline the most common standards in use today, starting with a review of the types of audio and functions required and moving on to discuss de-facto standards and review applicable architectures for future requirements.
