Integrating the various devices used in audio production requires the transfer of information between them. The level of integration achieved is directly related to the speed and sophistication of the communication paths. In this paper we will examine the communication requirements necessary for the high level of integration required in a digital audio workstation. We will show that current professional communication standards fail to meet many of these requirements. Finally, we will give an example of a system that expands on these standards to provide a highly integrated, moderately sized workstation.
