Eastman Kodak Co. has conducted a study of the feasibility of recording digital sound on motion picture film. The goal is a system that would provide several channels of high quality sound in the area normally occupied by a conventional variable area sound track. Recordings of digital data were performed and fundamental feasibility was demonstrated. The first part of this paper will describe this feasibility study. The second part of the paper will describe the findings of a SMPTE Study Group on Digital Audio on Motion Picture Film of which the author was chairman. The study group discussed such issues as the number of channels required for motion picture film, and the needed bandwidth and dynamic range.
