After a brief introduction to the theory of linear and nonlinear distortion, the factors affecting its audibility in music are examined. The available literature pertaining to distortion is reviewed. Research into these areas will be described with particular emphasis on the implication for minimum audible thresholds. The difficulty of correlating measurements with what is heard is discussed.
