Stereo in Automobiles

Document Thumbnail

On first consideration, it is easy to dismiss the automobile cabin as a possible place for serious music listening. It is noisy and loudspeaker location possibilities are restricted by more important considerations. The small interior has acoustics dramatically different from the living room where most program material is designed to be played. The occupants are there only because they are going somewhere, not to listen to music. However, many people are stuck with routine driving for considerable periods of time so they want music. They want more than clear radio reception, they want a great sounding stereo system.: A hard look at achieving high quality stereo in automobiles reveals a few advantages and several serious problems. Designers must identify and exploit advantages like the fixed locations of the listeners. However, most automotive problems must be attacked directly with specific automotive solutions. After about ten years of intense work, the industry is about half way to automotive stereo design maturity. The present state of the art stereo in automobiles provides for a high level of music enjoyment - better than many expensive but, casually set up home systems.
