This paper describes the MUSICAM digital audio source coding process which achieves a six to twelve fold bit-rate reduction over conventional digital PCM sound coding used on Compact Discs and in the studio. The stereophonic sound signal is encoded by a sub-band coding compression technique assisted by a perceptual model whereas the decoder uses an optimized polyphased network filter bank requiring very low computational power. The algorithm has been designed to take into account a number of practical operational constraints in the field of broadcasting, telecommunication and recording on digital storage media. Its high audio quality and simplicity have led the Eureka 147 - DAB partners to adopt it for Digital Audio Broadcasting, and the ISO/MPEG/Audio has decided to base the future sound compression standard (accompanying compressed video) on this bit structure and coding principle.
