Transform coding combined with entropy coding can be used to achieve good coding efficiency together with high flexibility for audio coding at low bit rates. ASPEC was developed as the joint proposal of AT&T Bell Laboratories, Thomson Consumer Electronics, Fraunhofer Society and CNET for the audio coding standard which is drafted by the ISO/IEC JTC1/SC2/WG11 audio experts group (MPEG/Audio). A similar combination of high frequency resolution and entropy coding is used to make Layer III of the forthcoming ISO standard suitable for uses such as ISDN audio transmission, fixed and writable storage applications, and Digital Audio Broadcasting.
