Waveframe Corporation, Long Beach, California 90803, USA: Last minute picture changes raise havoc with sound editing schedules. Digital sound editing technology can be used to partially automate the process of re-editing sound to match a revised picture. A digital editing system should allow working with multiple versions of edits. The sound edits which go with each version of the picture can be kept for reference or re-use if a part of the picture reverts back to a previous version. If the details of picture changes can be captured electronically, an editing system can move edited sound to new locations automatically. The system can then guide the editor directly to the areas that may need reworking. The design and implementation of editing systems with such capabilities will be made easier by industry-wide adoption of a standard media and format for movement and control of digital sound through the production and post production chain.
