The first attempts at matching multi-channel sound to picture were made in 1911, and ever since then advances in technology to both picture and sound have, more often than not, been adopted independently. This -piggy-backing- of technology has led to many disparities between picture and sound, far removed from the synergy that would create an ideal presentation. Some historical -matches- have worked, and the current relationship between sound and picture for today's cinema and television systems can be defined. This leads to some possible parameters of sound matching for future television systems.
