Practical Considerations in the Design of Music Systems Using VLSI

Document Thumbnail

Inexpensive electronic keyboard instruments have been made possible by the use of Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI). A typical system uses a fully custom VLSI -sound chip- which is under the control of a general-purpose microprocessor. This paper examines the tradeoffs involved in the design of a digital sound chip used in a commercial system. Two approaches to digital oscillator architecture are evaluated in light of the special limitations of LSI.
