As level of sophistication and automation continue to rise in both the Professional Recording and Music Industries, there is a growing need for greater integration of all phases of the music-making process. Musicians are making increasing use of computer-based sequencer programs and synthesizer patch editor/librarian programs. Composers are using music notation software and film click track computation software. Recording studios are being introduced to software via software-based automation packages. Integration problems appear when trying to synchronize sound effects and music sequences to film and video, or whenever any dialogue between MIDI and SMPTE-based equipment is needed.: To reap the rewards and avoid the pitfalls of this new technology, a means of integrating these various separate functions must be implemented. In addition, the Recording Studio itself faces the task of integrating the above functions into the existing recording process. This paper discusses the implementation of this integration using the newly-developed MIDI Time Code standard. In addition, the role of computer software in the Recording Studio is explored, along with a discussion of the issues and problems facing studio owners/operators who are considering integrating software into their studio.
