Only a small number of companies contribute to digital audio developments in Europe. The contributions cover almost all areas in digital audio, but the timing and priority are different from those typical of Japan. The paper covers the special role and developments of the broadcasting community; it gives an overview of past and current work from the industry; and mentions a number of specific achievements typical of the European attitude, which is that digital audio is a small part of a much wider trend of changing electronic technology. Potential strengths and weaknesses of Western Europe, and its attitude to high technology, which may influence its future market position, are briefly covered.
