With the advent of digital audio, and the development of low cost high quality stereo headphones, the statement that--The loudspeaker is the weakest link in the audio chain..,- often quoted in the past by specialists, has now come to be acknowledged by the average audiophile. This paper covers the requirements given in the past for obtaining good stereophonic reproduction in small rooms, and presents approaches that have been made to attain these requirements, particularly in regard to the much neglected directional characteristics, phase characteristics, and time delay characteristics. As a conclusion, the VPAS system with its straightforward salient features is discussed and some future anticipated developments are described.
