Design and Evaluation of a Sound Insulation Curtain Filled with Sand

Document Thumbnail

The paper presents the design and evaluation of a granule-filled sound insulation curtain. It provides a soundproofing performance of Rw = 27 dB while still maintaining flexibility to enable a folding behavior similar to that of a conventional curtain. Intended applications requiring adaptable acoustic designs include the creation of temporary meeting spaces in open-plan offices or sound insulation of windows and doors in music venues to reduce sound leakage. The inner layer of the 3-layer curtain system consists of a spacer fabric, i.e., two orthogonally connected fabric layers, filled with a granular material, namely quartz sand. To enhance the acoustic effectiveness as well as for design reasons, conventional sound absorption fabrics make up the outer layers. The presentation of the development process in chronological illustrates the chosen experiment-based approach for the investigation. Various parameters were analyzed gradually to be able to choose the optimum construction, and the final system was characterized regarding its suitability for the intended applications. Among others, the influence of the granular material and grain size and the curtain thickness on the acoustic transmission loss were determined. The final design achieved a 9 dB higher sound reduction than the market standard tested as reference.
