Audio-visual rendering of virtual environments with 6 degrees of freedom has been possible for some years and increasing in its quality. Typcial scientific experiments focus on either authenticity or plausibilty of virtualizations. This paper proposes an alternative approach by recreating an entire experiment in virtual reality and comparing its results to those of the original, real-life experiment to understand the limitation of the virtualization. The experiment evaluated the sweet area for localization in a large hemisphere of 24 loudspeakers for different Ambisonic playback orders. The virtualization employed two different acoustic models using open-source VST plug-ins whose results differed in their similarity to those of the original experiment.
