Precursor criteria for assessing the effectiveness of technical ear training programs.

Document Thumbnail

Three precursor criteria were developed for assessing the effectiveness of technical ear training programs (TETPs): the program must have clearly stated, professionally relevant goals; performance relating to the goals must be measured; and performance must be measured separately from the training program on an independent task. Eight spectral-based student-targeted TETPs were reviewed against these criteria. The review found that none of the eight programs met all precursor criteria as users' performance was measured on the TETP itself or on a similar task to that which students had previously trained on. The deployment of a TETP that met the precursor criteria was then detailed; however, despite meeting the criteria, a large-scale study did not provide evidence of the TETP's effectiveness.
