The Effective Radiation Area of Midsize Headphone Drivers in the Nonlinear Working Range

Commonly used models for analyzing the nonlinear behavior of current dynamic loudspeakers are based on lumped elements and assume the existence of an effective radiation area that depends neither on the frequency nor on the diaphragm displacement amplitude. The acceptance of this assumption is based on a vast amount of research done in the past decades showing high satisfactory results when analyzing dynamic loudspeaker drivers with classical mechanical design. However, the question about its suitability rises while analyzing dynamic midsize headphone drivers, since this kind of driver shows a clear different mechanical design as well as product application. This article presents an empirical study on the effect of high amplitude diaphragm displacement on the effective radiation area of midsize headphone drivers, having as a main objective the validation (or the disproof) of its applicability on the mentioned nonlinear lumped element models.
