This paper starts by reviewing the DAB standard and why the research engineers developed a wide band radio system using Mpeg 1. The paper then goes onto review the data rate constraints v the demand for new radio services to drive the take up of the new platform and what impact that has had on audio quality. The devices that consumers use are then considered and the impacts on the radio frequency network design and its impact on cost. The paper then tries to explore what can the broadcasters do to balance the quality quantity equation.
