In 1991, Gerzon proposed a hierarchical representation of multichannel signals as a means to handle the conversion between formats having differing numbers of speakers. If each conversion from one format to another is regarded as a separate problem, cascaded conversions are likely to give unsatisfactory results. Hierarchical concepts provide a framework for cascaded conversions, in particular requiring that conversion to a higher resolution and back should recover the original signals. This mainly tutorial presentation attempts to explain Gerzon’s concept and to suggest applications to contemporary formats such as 5.1, 7.1 and with-height layouts.
