The paper gives an overview over the recent increase in audio coding efficiency which results in the latest development within MPEG, spatial audio coding. This new tool allows the use of 5.1 multichannel audio at remarkable low bit rates and opens with its inherit stereo capabilities new opportunities to introduce 5.1 multichannel into existing applications. The basic principles of the spatial audio coding technology will be described and a first test results comparing the audio quality of currently available solutions with matrix surround sound and discrete 5.1 multichannel systems will be presented.
