Connecting consumer electronics (CE) products to the Internet demands a series of completely new concepts and solutions from the CE industry. It is key for CE products to offer an intuitive and consistent user interaction – accessing an Internet audio or video channel shall be as simple as playing a CD today. Networked consumer products are no longer self-contained systems that receive and process a well-defined and established signal. The Internet is a patchwork of various networks by definition and is still developing quickly with little control. Hence flexibility is a key success factor for networked CE devices. This paper discusses various aspects of the major building blocks of networked CE products to give a general overview of the challenges.
