"AA virtual reverberation system requires excessive computational power to generate a reverberant sound for most virtual space models. Even for its simple procedure involving the use of the conventional convolution process, many additions and multiplications must be carried out due to the long impulse response of the reverberation filter. Reducing the length of the filter’s impulse response can reduce the computation required to generate the reverberant sound. The simple reduction of the length of the filter’s impulse response, however, can degrade the quality of the system’s reverberant sound by distorting the reverberation filter’s virtual-space characteristics, which is intended in the filter design level. To overcome the trade-off relation between the complexity reduction and the quality maintenance, reflectioncharacteristics- preserving filter approximation is proposed. For the given reverberation filter, which models the shoebox shaped concert hall, the output quality and the complexity of the system were evaluated using the proposed method. The results of the subjective quality evaluations using the MUSHRA test showed that the reverberant sound generated by the system with the proposed method obtained an average score of 85.80, which is 9.84 higher than the score of the output generated by the system with the conventional approximation method. Moreover, the complexity evaluation results showed that the system with the proposed approximation method required only 0.14% of the computation time required for the system without approximation.sound for most virtual space models.
