Speech Intelligibility in Teleconference Application of Directional Audio Coding

Directional Audio Coding (DirAC), which is a method to parametrize the directional sound field, can be applied to a low bit-rate teleconferencing. The direction and diffuseness of the sound field are analyzed from microphone signals within frequency-bands in one end, transmitted to the other end as a metadata in a single channel with an audio signal, and used to reproduce spatial sound. In this paper, one- and two-dimensional arrays of omnidirectional microphones to provide input signals for DirAC teleconferencing are reviewed. A listening test to measure speech intelligibility in DirAC teleconferencing was conducted, when both one- and two-dimensional microphone arrays were utilized. The results for the test are presented in this paper.
