Intuitive Hand Gestures in Measurement of the Perceived Size of an Auditory Image of a Symphony Orchestra

The perceived size of a symphony orchestra was studied with a novel method by tracking the movements of the hands of an assessor with an optical tracking system. The task of the assessor was to outline the size of the auditory source with hand gestures. An experiment with three musical pieces, three concert halls and three listening positions, was completed by 12 assessors. The results suggest that perception of the size of an orchestra is highly individual. In addition, the proposed nonverbal elicitation technique revealed that a concert hall has a significant effect on the perceived size of the auditory source.
