The paper presents an outline of the near-future development potential of mobile phone audio. The development of audio is driven by the ever broadening scope multimedia applications, to provide seamless connectivity to the user’s environment, and the need to improve voice telephony quality. The enablers for the new developments include, besides the continuous improvement in processing power, evolution of hardware and software architecture, transducer technology, and the rapid evolution of transducer-related signal processing.
