We discuss the problems that arise when evaluating the performance of blind upmix algorithms. After having reviewed several evaluation methodologies encountered in literature, we describe a method involving conventional spatial attributes grading and user comments analyses. We report listening test results during which four upmix algorithms have been evaluated. The dependence of algorithms' performance upon test materials and the limited influence of listeners' expertise level upon the gradings are highlighted. We analyse the experimental data and discuss the design of subjective methods for evaluating blind upmix algorithms.
