System Configuration for High Quality Audio Capturing in a Large Microphone Array

Document Thumbnail

Speech acquisition in a noisy environment can be improved by a beamformer which discriminates signals based on their physical location. Numerous beamforming techniques have been proposed for applications such as video conferencing and hands-free speech acquisition in general. This project examines potentials of the Delay and Sum (DS) beamformer combined with a large circular broadband microphone array as an alternative sound recording technique in the Outside Broadcasting. We have developed the core technology and a prototype of a Real Time (RT), user controlled system for audio production with focusing of the sound acquired with a large, directive microphone array. The design aspects of such a system and measurements relevant for an adequate performance are discussed.
