Internet Radio Surround: MPEG Surround over ISMA Ultravox

Document Thumbnail

This paper describes the combination of two emerging technologies for realizing Internet radio with surround sound. On the one hand, MPEG Surround allows a fully backward compatible representation of multi-channel audio at bit rates that are only slightly higher than bit rates currently used for stereo. On the other hand, Ultravox is a low complexity streaming protocol based on HTTP which allows interleaving of status and metadata information with the streamed media. The paper describes how MPEG surround can be transmitted over Ultravox solving issues like multiplexing, aggregation, fragmentation, session set-up and synchronization. The described payload format achieves this in a simple but efficient way and is currently standardized in ISMA for the generic transport of MPEG-4 codecs over Ultravox.
