A Survey of Audio Forensic Gunshot Investigations

Document Thumbnail

Audio recordings of gunshots may be used with other forensic evidence to identify or eliminate gunshot source locations, to establish certain attributes of the weapon fired, and/or elucidate or eliminate certain physical parameters of the gunshot surroundings. Under very controlled circumstances audio recordings have been able to identify or eliminate the type of weapon fired. This paper presents a general overview of the gunshot acoustics and reviews three cases involving gunshot acoustics.
