The Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) is developing a family of specifications to support interoperability between the different technological components of the complex systems that are powering the multimedia revolution. These components have various origins such as broadcasting, communications, information technology and home electronics. Users are demanding mobility, ease of use, flexibility of systems and end-to-end interoperability. There is less and less distinction between business and consumer systems as they are both being used in different ways to perform similar tasks and have many common requirements which are leading to new solutions which can be used in both environments.
