We have constructed 5-speaker panning laws in which each speaker feed is a sum of circular harmonics. The maximum order of harmonic has varied between 1 and 11, and in each case the coefficients of the harmonics has been optimised numerically to give best performance on a particular loudspeaker layout according to various psychoacoustic criteria. A panning law using fourth order circular harmonics has been auditioned on the ITU layout and judged superior to conventional pairwise panning in several respects.
