Multi-channel surround sound formats have become an industry standard for sound storage and reproduction. These formats appear to be somewhat inflexible to allow good spatial reproduction for other speaker set-ups and other reproduction system. Object-oriented coding philosophy as adopted by MPEG-4 offers new possibilities for multi-channel spatial audio. It allows for adaptation to the user and the reproduction system. Examples of such systems will be presented and demonstrations are given.
