The paper shows that many factors can and do affect the intelligibility of a live sound performance. Not all of these parameters however are under the control of the sound system designer or operator. In particular, the affect that room acoustics can have on intelligibility is discussed and techniques highlighted to either overcome or at least partially ameliorate the problem. It will be shown that few, if any of the current speech intelligibility measurement metrics are capable of correctly assessing sound system intelligibility performance.
