Ambisonic Surround-Sound Mixing for Multitrack Studios

Document Thumbnail

We describe the production of ambisonic surround-sound mixes from multitrack masters using a number of devices intended to be used in various combinations to provide a retrofit package for existing multitrack studios. These devices include: a professional ambisonic decoder for monitoring, a UHJ transcoder/encoder for production of the consumer UHJ surround-sound format, a pan-rotate system providing outboard 360-deg panning and rotation of complete sound fields in the professional B-format for surround-sound, a B-format converter that converts stereo mixing desks to B-format, a sound field microphone for capturing original sound fields directly in B-format, and a 3-channel UHJ encoder. The uses of these devices in the studio environment and for remixing are described.
