Acoustical Measurements of Courtyard-Type Traditional Chinese Theater in East China

Document Thumbnail

Acoustical measurements were taken at six courtyard-type traditional Chinese theaters in east China. The theaters were generally rectangle in plan and some of them were built inside Chinese gardens. All measurements were taken in unoccupied conditions with no seats in some cases. The theaters consisted of a pavilion-liked stage attached to a courtyard surrounded by covered corridors or buildings. Preliminary analysis showed an average strength (G) of 2.4 dB, an average early decay time (EDT) of 0.8 sec. and an average early support (ST1) of -9.2dB. This research was a first step for a three-year on-going project about traditional Chinese theatre and subjective assessments will be undertaken later. Key words: Acoustical measurements, Traditional Chinese theatre.
