Loudness and Dynamic Range in the Home

Document Thumbnail

Digital delivery media offer wider dynamic range audio than their analogue predecessors. This entails adopting a larger difference between average levels (and thus implied loudness) and signal peaks. Though possible to implement in the TV station or media studio, problems will occur in the home with inconsistent loudness levels and electrical levels within consumer receivers and audio equipment. One audio delivery system includes specific tools to overcome these problems while allowing the full dynamic of digital audio to be delivered. These tools - Dialogue Normalization and Dynamic Range Control - are described with particular reference to digital TV.
