Traditional audio DSP design focuses on optimising for simple benchmarks such as multiply/accumulate (MAC) times, filters and FFTs. Increasing complexity of digital audio applications, and convergence with other media including video and data, means that a very much wider variety of functions need to be addressed. This paper describes an approach to audio silicon architecture design that is based on optimising for a range of complex generic benchmarks, matched to the needs of diverse markets, rather than focussing narrowly on a simple set of mathematical operations.
