An IASA study, executed by the National Congress Library of Washington, USA, estimates that more than 60 million program hours of tapes are stored in world-wide archives. Adding to those other private libraries such as broadcasters, blind-associations and govern-mental institutions, this figure is probably 3 to 4 times higher. We are dealing with enormous amount of analogue audio data which eventually needs to be transferred to digital. Various aspects make this transfer mandatory as the demand of modern libraries is changing. To serve their clients and meet expectations adequately, archives today have to provide:
